John Boyd's OODA Loop

Project Managment

"This strategy is not to wait for the competitor to make a mistake and hope to capitalize on such mistakes, but rather to adopt deception, make fast transient maneuvers, and show unexpected reactions to competitor initiatives".

Observe. Orient. Decide. Act.

Observe:

  • System scans environment to identify strengths and weaknesses to find mismatches

Orient:

  • Interpretation of observations- Whether or not it is better than competition

Decide:

  • Weighing options and picking best one

Act:

  • Implementing selected decision. Basis of next round of observation

Purpose:

  • Make organization unpredictable to competitors

  • Inhibits competition from adapting or reacting
